Project background

Bangladesh, suffering from extensive corruption, disorder, and political violence is one of the poorest countries in the world. Situated on the world’s biggest river delta, it is also subject to harsh monsoon seasons and floods, which regularly devastate thousands of lives.

Women living in these increasingly poor conditions are also often oppressed by a culture which tolerates and even permits the inhumane treatment of them. Commonly married as children and denied an education and a voice, women struggle to free themselves from this poverty and injustice that they endure. Consequently, nearly half of all children in Bangladesh suffer from malnutrition ( one of the most severe rates of malnourished children in the world. )

Empowered women:
a hidden hope for Bangladesh

The potential of women to learn new skills, run small businesses and lead local community groups has traditionally been dismissed or neglected in Bangladesh.

However it is well understood that women have a vital role in their community and are key to the development process. Over the last decade we have been focused on working with women and girls to improve their status and release their potential.

Today, we have over 600 learning and savings groups across 6 areas in Bangladesh. These groups are providing a safe and supportive environment for thousands of overlooked and often abused women to restore their dignity and discover their potential. Within each group women are encouraged to contribute to their own group savings account, and receive literacy, health, legal and business training. Working together, they are able to develop the skills and confidence that they need to provide for their children and protect them from disease and exploitation.

These groups are empowering women to bring hope and transformation to their poverty-stricken communities. In 2009 we aiming to support another 150 women’s groups, we need your help to do this.
